Special Issue Improved Topical Anti-Infective Therapy
About this Research Topic
The possibility to obtain high and extended concentrations of drugs at the treatment site, reduced systemic toxicity and improved compliance, are the major advantages of topically administered anti-infective therapy with respect to systemic therapy. In addition, simultaneous administration of antimicrobial agent combined with other therapeutics (anti-inflammatory, wound healing, pain-relief, anti-itching agents, etc.) in a single formulation, might improve the therapy outcome.
Moreover, in an era of antimicrobial resistance, novel delivery strategies could enhance the efficiency of topical anti-infective agents. The present Research Topic is dedicated to advanced treatment strategies for topical bacterial, fungal and viral infections affecting the skin and mucous membranes, as well as novel means to deliver antimicrobials. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of different aspects of anti-infective therapy, with focus on innovative materials, nanomedicine and advanced formulations, active substances and strategies that can be effective for the prevention and treatment of topical infections.
Original research as well as review articles in the different fields are welcome. Preliminary research findings could also be accepted.
